Understanding Vehicle Computer Diagnostics

Modern vehicles use electronic control modules and sensors to monitor engine operation and other systems. When a monitored condition falls outside the expected range, the vehicle may store a diagnostic trouble code and illuminate a warning such as the check engine light.

What does a diagnostic trouble code tell you?

A trouble code identifies the system or condition that needs investigation. It does not always identify a failed part or prove that a particular component needs replacement. Several mechanical, electrical or operating conditions can produce similar symptoms.

What happens during vehicle diagnostics?

A technician reviews the concern, reads available diagnostic information and performs appropriate checks to evaluate the cause. Your description of when the warning appeared, how the vehicle behaves and any recent service can help guide the inspection. Wilmington Tire & Auto explains the findings and recommended next steps before the repair proceeds.
